The CRO's Guide to Systematic Pipeline Generation
The difference between good and great CROs isn't their ability to close deals—it's their ability to build systems that generate pipeline independent of any single person's effort.
The Hero Problem
Most sales organizations run on heroes. Top performers who consistently crush quota through sheer force of will. But hero-dependent models have fatal flaws:
- Heroes leave (often to competitors)
- Heroes don't transfer knowledge effectively
- Heroes create cultural problems when they're treated differently
Systematic Pipeline Generation
A systematic approach to pipeline treats it like a manufacturing process:
Inputs: Lead sources, target accounts, market signals Process: Qualification criteria, outreach sequences, conversion steps Outputs: Qualified opportunities at predictable rates
The Five Pillars
1. Diversified Lead Sources Never let more than 30% of pipeline come from a single source. Inbound, outbound, partnerships, events, referrals—build multiple streams.
2. Clear Qualification Framework Define exactly what makes a lead worth pursuing. BANT is outdated; build criteria specific to your buyer.
3. Standardized Outreach Create templates and sequences that any rep can execute. Personalization matters, but the framework should be consistent.
4. Conversion Metrics Track conversion rates at every stage. When numbers drop, you'll know exactly where to investigate.
5. Feedback Loops Build mechanisms for sales to inform marketing, and marketing to inform product. Pipeline generation is a team sport.
The CRO's Real Job
Your job isn't to generate pipeline. Your job is to build and refine the system that generates pipeline. The distinction matters enormously.
