The Ghost Champion

PacedRevenue21 August 2026

A Ghost Champion is an enthusiastic mid-level advocate who absorbs months of selling effort while the economic buyer who controls the budget is never activated. It is the primary failure mode of the Activate gate: the enthusiast is convinced, the buying committee is not, and the deal quietly dies.

How to spot a Ghost Champion

The Ghost Champion test: open the CRM and name the last time the economic buyer did anything at all, attended a call, replied to a thread, sanctioned a next step. When every recent touchpoint belongs to one enthusiastic contact, the committee is not activating.

What it looks like in practice. One sales-forum commenter, on why proposals go quiet: "Because now the buyer is alone with a PDF and a bunch of uncertainty and nobody to talk it through with. They said yes-ish, but now they have to re-sell it internally or sit with their doubts... No wonder people go dark." That is the Ghost Champion from the inside: the advocate was never equipped, or never able, to carry the case to the person who signs.

What it is not. A Ghost Champion is not a real champion who has gone temporarily quiet, and not the same thing as being ghosted after a proposal, which is the downstream symptom. The distinction is structural: a real champion has pulled the economic buyer into the evaluation; a Ghost Champion stands in for them.

Where it comes from. Named in The Revenue Debt You Cannot See as the Activate gate's primary failure mode.
